Starting a Podcast - Coming Up With the Idea

(This is the first in a series of three blogs)

Part 2

Clocked In With The Press

A lot of people have ideas for podcasts, but they don't know where to start. So let's answer that question: how do you start a podcast?

First, you need to determine the optimal outcome or goal of your podcast. This will dictate nearly all of your decisions as you go through the process of producing your show.

Are you trying to monetize? Or are you just doing it for fun? Do you want to use your show to generate leads for your primary business? Or do you have a social or political goal you want to achieve? Make sure you are clear on this before you do anything else.

Did you do that first step? Now you can start to think about the premise of your podcast. This part is hard, and it should be hard. Every idea has an audience, so think about who the audience would be when you are brainstorming show ideas. Are they the audience you are trying to reach? Is that audience large enough to accomplish your goal?

Once you align the goal, the idea, and the audience, you have the perfect recipe for a successful podcast!

(Stay tuned for my next blog which will talk about the minimum gear you need for podcast production.)
