Owner's Update II - April 8, 2021

Updated: May 12

Today I am typing this blog in my control room and looking around at my semi-functional studio. Soon we will be ramping up to our maximum capacity, and WOW did it take a lot of work to get here. I had a lot of help making it happen, and there are some key people who deserve recognition for their invaluable contributions to the successful construction and opening of this studio:

Kyrie & Gabriel

The urgency and expediency of this build wasn't for me - it was for them. Having strangers walk through the door of our home to record music for 2 years was not ideal, as you can imagine. My children always supported me, they gave me encouragement when I needed it, and during the times where I felt like I let them down by leaving my old career they never let me feel discouraged. Ultimately, I want to spend more time with them. The life of a business owner and sole proprietor is extremely busy and taxing, and my children will only be young for so long. Having a large commercial space outside of my home enables me to employ a staff that can operate without me, freeing me up to be more present with them.

Kyrie, Gabriel: this studio is for you - you are the inspiration behind it and the reason for it. I hope when you see you the name Altman on the building that you feel proud and know how important you are and always will be to me. Love you guys.

Nadia Irizarry

I was blessed to find love in the midst of this studio build. In a short time we have accomplished so much together and grown extremely close. I could not be happier! I asked her to paint some paintings for us to feature and sell for her, then suddenly she was here every week making everything she touched better. Nadia has literally spent multiple days and nights straight at this studio with me, even recruiting her friends (shoutout to Angel and Mia) to come help out for a few days.

Nadia: I credit you entirely for the stunning design and aesthetic of this studio. Thank you for the selfless gift of your time and creativity, and your love. Every time I look at the walls and the incredible artwork you've created I feel such pride and a stronger love for you. As the world gets back to semi-normal I plan on spoiling the crap out of you. I love you so much!

Clarence and Sue Lewis

When my housing plans changed and suddenly we had nowhere to go, my former parents-in-law, Clarence and Sue, offered to let my kids and I stay with them while we got back on our feet. I would literally be homeless without them. Every other week, while I've been building, they've been cooking meals and hanging with the kids. Not once have they discouraged me from pursuing my dream. They have never criticized, never complained, and have provided unconditional love and guidance during this crucial time when I truly needed it.

Mom and Dad: Thank you for always treating me like family. You've bought groceries, let me borrow cars and tools, and even let me keep the dog in the house! You both inspire me to be a better father and a better man. What you have done for my kids and I during this last few months can never truly be repaid, though I will try to find a way anyways. I love you both.

Darren Myers

Darren has been working in this studio full time for 3 months. He is second only to me in total time invested in this build. Darren ran the wire for around 80% of this studio. He's never done any construction work prior to this, but now he's framed and insulated walls, mounted drywall, painted, and done dozens of other little things all over this place. He's also tolerated my meltdowns, encouraged me when I needed it, and has shown an unshakeable dedication to the success of the business.

Darren: There is no way we would be where we are today without your contributions. Some people were skeptical about me hiring a young kid with no experience. I saw your work ethic and the drive in your eyes and knew you were the right choice. I've been hard on you, and I know this job has pushed you beyond your limits, but you stuck with it and earned your place. Your name is written in the walls of this business forever and you should look back on what you've done with pride. I'm proud that you are part of the Altman Studios family.

Patrick Coughlin

Patrick has been the secret sauce in my business for over a year now. He's a 30+ year music industry veteran who has been providing insight and guidance on this build from the very start (he also helped with my home studio build in 2020). Patrick provided priceless feedback during the design phase, configured and soldered all of our audio cabling, and helped secure optimal prices on new equipment and materials.

Patrick: You have gone above and beyond for us. Without your guidance this would be a very different place, and I am extremely thankful that you've been here to ensure that we are doing things right from start to finish. You're a good man and a true professional. Your contribution to this studio will never be forgotten and you will also always be part of the Altman Studios family.

Of course, the love and support of all of my friends and family cannot be understated. There are just too many people to name! Thank you to everyone who has enouraged me to pursue my dream. I am extremely blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life, and I am dedicating the future of Altman Studios towards giving back as much as I can to the community I love so much.

Altman Studios is always looking for talented artists and bands to work with! As a community-centric studio, our goal is to incubate artists and help them achieve the level of success they are aiming for.
