Hello! My name is Darren Myers and I’m the assistant audio engineer at Altman Studios. I’m a 23 year old bass player from Antioch, California who is attending Los Medanos college and studying production and audio engineering. I’ve always dreamed of working at a recording studio since high school, so starting this job has pivoted my life into this crazy world surrounded by music. I’ve learned a lot throughout my audio adventure with my head engineer Brian so I thought to share my insights and experiences with anyone interested in reading about it in hopes that it will be helpful or entertaining to anybody!
Building the new studio location is an unreal experience. A year ago I was doing a project about building a commercial studio in college. I’d never guess a year later I’d actually be on the front lines doing it! I wasn't much of a handyman before this build, but I think I’ve really learned to get my hands dirty. While I’m still a bit of a novice when it comes to the construction portion of the build, I’m very grateful for the insght it’s given me and opportunity to get really personal with the new studio. I know exactly now it’s wired and every possible signal path for audio and video to travel. The interconnection system has to be my favorite part of this project. It’s very intricate and sophisticated like the studios we work in at school. I’m very proud to say that I routed about 90% of a commercial studio with over 50 inputs and outputs.
We are very close to being finished with this build. With the construction finally out of the way, all we have left is creating the aesthetics of the studio, acoustically treating each room, and moving in equipment! I can’t wait to start this next phase with Brian. Painting and seeing the doors and windows roll in is really going to create the overall vibe of the new studio. I’m excited to see how it all plays out!
